There are many bands within our lovely, spooky subculture. Many are some describe as the founders or definitive musicians who were key to the upbringing and defining the era of goth. It is a community of its own that still goes on strong today. There are many bands that defined the era such as: The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, Nick Cave, and many others. These are the bands that are my all-time favorites and I found to be the best or most influential.
Disclaimer: I know not everyone is going to agree with my list, however, this is a list of my top bands and could be different from yours. And this could help newcomers (or Baby Bats) find music inspiration of where to look first when it comes to bands. Enjoy!
The Cure:
First up we have, The Cure. These guys are a goth music staple in the music scene and are currently still going on strong. Their hit "Friday I'm in Love" topped the charts of 1992 and is one of their well-known songs. To the world, Robert Smith, is known as one of the leading Godfather's of goth.
Siouxsie and The Banshees:
Siouxsie, is known to the world as the Godmother of goth. She is what everyone refers or associates with goth and the bat cave scene. She split from the Banshees in the early 2000's and went solo. She still does minor performances and appearances today. With their smash hit album, Tinderbox, her spine-tingling vocals will have you begging for more. There's no voice out there quite like Siouxsie. Truly a goddess indeed.
Suspiria:
Suspiria is quite popular within the culture these days. The group started in 1993 by Carl Lucian and Mark Tansley, and was mainly a darkwave/ gothic rock band. They disbanded sometime after 1998 and reformed new groups. Memorable songs such as "You Bleed Me" and (Now, We See) The Swine are still listened to and played at goth clubs today.
Bauhaus:
Peter Murphy is the secondary Godfather of goth music. If his legendary cheekbones don't entrance you, then his deep singing voice will. If you listen to some of the music from his band, Bauhaus, you'll understand what I mean.
The Fair Sex:
These guys has been around since the Bat Cave era of goth. They follow the classic darkwave and synth monotype. Catchy beats and vocals, which are perfect for dancing to and busting a move at the goth night.
Merciful Nuns:
Merciful Nuns, have played numerous goth festivals in Europe. (mainly Germany) Festivals such as; M'era Luna, Amphi, and Wave Gothic Treffen. They will usually tour with Near Earth Orbit. This band is widely beloved by many, including popular YouTube star , Black Friday. (It's Black Friday)
Shout out to my adopted big sister, Freyja (aka Black Friday) , for introducing me to them. Love ya! xx
The Sisters of Mercy:
These guy's are super influential to my music taste into goth music. The Sisters of Mercy, have no doubt been a long favorite of mine since childhood. Unlike the other bands, the front man makes the claim he is "not a goth". However, apart to this belief and statement, his band has inspired many in the Black scene from either physical style or musicianship.
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds:
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, are also very popular and happen to be a favorite. These guys have existed since the Bat Cave era.
Type O Negative:
I tend to dig these guys a lot. I was first introduced to Type O Negative when I was in grade school and have loved them ever since. Besides, can't go wrong with these guys!
And last, but certainly not least......
Nine Inch Nails:
Nine Inch Nails, is also widely beloved by many spooky, weirdos alike. Just try to find a goth who hasn't heard of them or doesn't at least dig a song/album of theirs. The overall sound of the band is very unique and a thing on its own. Their music has a cool vibe to it and is very catchy.
